Syria, Jordan reaffirm close ties, discuss aftermath of Jordanian airstrikes

Damascus, Oct. 28 (SANA) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed the repercussions of recent Jordanian airstrikes on Syrian territory and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, according to a joint statement issued Wednesday by the two countries’ foreign ministries.

The discussions took place during a telephone call in which Safadi, Jordan‘s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, reaffirmed his country’s full respect for Syria‘s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and stability, as well as the safety of its citizens.

Safadi stressed that Jordan considers Syria’s security and stability an integral part of its own national security, highlighting the close and unprecedented cooperation and coordination between the two countries.

The two ministers discussed the consequences of airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces on Monday against positions belonging to the terrorist organization ISIS.

According to the statement, Safadi said the operations were based on intelligence gathered on the ground and were intended to neutralize confirmed threats and imminent terrorist attacks targeting Jordan’s security.

Safadi expressed deep regret and sorrow over civilian casualties resulting from the strikes, which he said had targeted ISIS, a group posing a common threat to both countries.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Syrian people and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The two ministers also reaffirmed the deep historical ties between Syria and Jordan and their shared determination to expand cooperation across various sectors.

They emphasized the importance of addressing any issues that could strain bilateral relations through frank and responsible dialogue, stressing that the security and future of the two countries are closely interconnected.

Safadi stressed that Jordan is as committed to the safety of Syrian citizens as it is to the safety of its own citizens.

Al-Shaibani and Safadi emphasized that Jordanian-Syrian relations are characterized by close cooperation in addressing shared challenges, particularly defeating terrorism and combating cross-border drug and arms smuggling through effective and sustainable institutional channels.

Recognizing the importance of direct field and security coordination in their joint efforts to defeat terrorism and protect civilians, the two ministers stressed the urgent need to establish a framework for cooperation through the formation of a joint security committee.

The committee would examine all details and facts surrounding the recent operations, follow up on their repercussions, and develop mechanisms for field and intelligence coordination to address terrorist threats.

These efforts would safeguard Syrian sovereignty, protect innocent civilian lives and reflect the strength and resilience of the fraternal relations between the two countries and their peoples.
