Army seizes two rigged cars in north Lebanon

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Two rigged cars were seized by the Lebanese Army during early morning raids Sunday in north Lebanon as the military regained control over the northern district of Minyeh, security sources told The Daily Star .

The Army in a statement said it confiscated two cars - a Mercedes and a Renault Rapid - rigged with explosives and rocket propelled grenades during raids on militant hideouts in the Minyeh village of Bhanine.

An Army force had attacked militants hiding in the As-Salam school in Bhanine, wounding several militants as others fled.

“The militants left behind large quantities of weapons and ammunition,” the Army statement said. “The Army also seized the two cars ... rigged with explosives and rocket propelled grenades in the vicinity of [As-Salam] school.”

Lebanese Army helicopters had pounded the hideouts of militants in Bhanine Saturday, hours after gunmen killed two soldiers in the area and five others escaped a kidnap attempt.

Army helicopters pounded the surrounding of the Haroun Mosque in Bhanine in Minyeh, where gunmen affiliated with Sheikh Khaled Hablas, who plotted attacks against the Army Saturday morning in the Minyeh-Dinnieh area, are based.

On Sunday, the state-run National News Agency reported that the Army has tightened the noose around militants based in the Haroun Mosque, allowing soldiers to enter it and regain control of its premises.
