Afghan MP targeted by suicide bomber, 3 killed

A suicide car bomber targeted the vehicle of an Afghan MP in the capital Kabul on Sunday, killing at least three civilians and injuring 20 others, Afghan authorities said.

The driver detonated his explosive-laden car near the vehicle of prominent Afghan MP Shukria Barakzai, in the 6th police district, near the Lower House compound in Kabul, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi.

Shukria Barakzai was heading to the parliament. A picture circulating on social media shows her walking away from a partially damaged bulletproof land cruiser car.

She was slightly injured in the blast and has been taken to the hospital.

Prominent Afghan MP Shukria Barakzai, an outspoken and civil activist, has been a fervent critic of Taliban militants and their activities.

The explosion also caused damages to nearby vehicles and buildings.

“I was sitting in my office. It was a very strong explosion and I thought the whole four-floor building had collapsed. There was glass and smoke everywhere,” said Najibulah, whose head was bleeding.

“I saw the body of a young girl stained with blood on the ground and several people were screaming and calling names of their relatives,” he added.

The area was cordoned off by Afghan national security forces for further investigations.

No group has yet to claim responsibility for the bombing.

Taliban militants have intensified their attacks since the Afghan government security agreements with the United States and NATO, whose combat forces are preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan at the end of the year.

“As winter season is coming and mountains are full snow, Taliban militants focus on the cities for their operations,” said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi.
