ISIS kills 21 soldiers near Al Shaer gas field east Homs

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 21 soldiers of forces loyal to Basher al-Assad have been killed by radical Islamic State group near al-Shaer gas field east Homs, monitoring group said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 21 soldiers of Syrian regime army and its backed militia of National Defence Forces (NDF) have been killed in the last 24 hours.

IS militants stepped up their attack in the last 4 days attempting to seize the gas field and its wells which were re-captured by Assad forces two weeks ago, the Observatory said.

In relevant context, ISIS killed Brigadier Muhsen Said Hussein, top officer in military Intelligence, near the strategic gas field last Tuesday.

Hussein was the head of Suqour al-Sahra’a (En: desert hawks), one of the most well-trained units which contributed in many influential battles in Homs and Latakia.

The slain officer, who gained reputation as a brutal and savage commander, buried in his hometown, Safita, in the countryside of Tartus on Wednesday according to pro-Bashar al-Assad social media pages.

Hussein supporters used to dub him ‘desert lion’. Even some activists said his popularity was bigger as his rival Col. Suhail al-Hassan, the commander of military operation in Hama province.
