At least 100 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants were killed in the southern part of Baghdad on Wednesday, Iraq’s defense ministry said.
Air-assisted riot police and Shiite volunteers carried out the operation, according to a written statement from Iraq’s defense ministry.
An ammunition-depot and 250 explosives were seized during theraid in Al-Meamil district and police also destroyed 15 ISIL vehicles, the statement added.
Iraq has been gripped by a security vacuum since June 2014, when ISIL stormed the northern province of Mosul and declared what it called a "caliphate" in Iraq and Syria.
