Viral Bronchiolitis kills 5 new-born babies in Aleppo

ALEPPO (Zaman Al Wasl)- Five new-born babies died of Bronchiolitis in Alatarib in Aleppo’s Western countryside, as a result of viral infection.

Dr. Abdul Rahman Obaid, Director of Alatarib Hospital told Zaman al-Wasl that five babies died, they were under a month old and arrived hospital dead, the cause of death most likely to be viral Bronchiolitis.

Dr. Obaid revealed that nearly 1500 children were infected by the virus, where almost 300 babies were admitted to Hospital because of their severe condition, while 15 infants were transferred to Turkish hospitals for ventilation and intensive care.

According to Obaid, that kind of infection is well known, it gets severer in cold weather, and affects all ages, but because bronchioli of infants and new-born babies are too thin, they easily get blocked because of swelling and secretions causing difficulties in breathing and oxygen exchange.

“The snow storm and extremely cold weather, accompanied with lack of heating material had exaggerated the severity of the infections.

Alatarib hospital manager explained that his hospital suffers of shortage of essential medications and equipments; he requested cooperation and support from medical bodies responsible for the liberated areas.
