Iraq: Peshmerga forces kill 36 ISIL militants in Sinjar

Iraqi Peshmerga forces killed 36 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants Tuesday near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a Peshmerga commander said.

“Peshmerga forces repelled ISIL’s attack and killed 36 militants, including Abo Omar al-Kurdi, an ISIL leader,”Albay Berham Arif, Peshmerga’s commander of Sinjar district, said.

Several people were also wounded in the clashes that lasted for two hours. Arif claimed that ISIL militants retreated and even left behind bodies of their dead in the district.

“We have successfully thwarted ISIL’s suicide attacks against Peshmerga because of our precautions,” Arif added.

The Peshmerga claimed to free the Syrian Kurdish town of ISIL militants Monday. Approximately 90 percent of Kobani has been freed from ISIL fighters, U.S. Central Command had said.

Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani has also thanked Turkey for its role in “freeing” Kobani from ISIL fighters.
