At least 23 people killed in Assad's airstrikes on Douma

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime extended its intense aerial campaign against rebel-held city of Douma near Damascus on Monday, conducting a series of airstrikes that killed at least 23 people, including five children, activists said.

Activists said air force strikes conducted 2 air strikes on the capital of Eastern Ghouta suburbs, killing 23 people after targeting popular market and two medical centers.

Towns of Eastern Ghouta have become a clear target to the Syrian regime air force since last week. The war planes have carried out more than 300 strikes, killing 200 people and wounded more than one thousand, according to activists and monitoring groups.

Pro-Assad activists say the gruesome revenge of Eastern Ghouta suburbs is a response to 300-rocket attack by key Islamist group which killed 10 people last Thursday.

Zahran Alloush, Islam Army’s commander said in a message on his Twitter account the last attack was a "taste" of what the Syrian military had done to Ghouta.

He described Damascus as a "military zone" in a statement earlier this week and said his group would respond to Syrian air force strikes on Ghouta.

More than 220,000 people have been killed since the conflict in Syria erupted in March 2011.
