Since Syria’s democratic uprising began in March 2011 as many as 153 journalists have been killed at least. Countless reports have indicated that regime forces have been engaged in a targeted campaign which has singled out individual journalists with unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearances and intimidation. These acts are in clear violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 largely as peaceful protests against Assad's rule. It escalated into a civil war after opposition supporters took up arms to fight a brutal government crackdown on dissent.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to the U.N.'s recent estimate.
