Iraq: ISIL executes senior army officers in Mosul

(Anadolu News Agency)- Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants killed five senior Iraqi army officers by firing squad in western Mosul, security sources said Wednesday.

The sources did not disclose any further information as to why the officers were killed. Such killings and attacks aimed at army and police officers are a frequent occurrence.

Meanwhile, Malullah al-Ubeydi, the head of Baghdadi District's council, said armed tribesmen, backed by international coalition airstrikes carried out an operation against ISIL militants.

The operation was launched in Madham, Gabat and Mahazeen villages of Haditha district located in the western province of Anbar.

"Tribesmen continue to fight to retake their villages from the militant group," Ubeydi told The Anadolu Agency, adding 25 militants were killed and five others wounded in the operation.

Clashes between Iraqi forces and the militant group ISIL have been ongoing since June 2014 when the armed group seized Mosul and other territories in Iraq.

This prompted the U.S. to form an international coalition, which has launched numerous airstrikes against ISIL targets in both Iraq and Syria.
