Spending of Syrian Opposition since forming the Syrian National Council (SNC) was shockingly high and lacking transparency, which was one essential principles of Syrian Revolution.
Zaman al-Wasl publishes some financial documents of the Syrian National Council, the first opposition institution.
The Council received €.40 million; 15 million of them were spent on aid and relief.
This article would present the amount of money spent since establishing the Council in 2nd October 2011 till the end of 2012, which reached to €.22 million, 8.3 million of them went to aid and relief, all of them were distributed by only one person belonged to particular political party.
Receipts of SNC’s members showed that all of them documented each cent they spent, even someone forwarded a receipt of TRY.40 as mobile phone recharging cost. Even many times members got paid without any receipt.
Cost of phone calls for one year reached to €17743. Documents showed that calls and transportations were the most cost among spending. Even who owned a private car, the council covered all cost of fuel and service.
A document showed that service cost for a member’s private car reached to TRY1300, while other receipt showed that cost of lifting a broken down car was TRY70.
All receipts provided to the council’s accountant by the council’s members were paid, despite all of them had salaries, even the private guards or assistants, who usually were members of the families, received salaries of €1200.
A receipt showed that a member bought a mobile phone for TRY.1.922.86 and all calls were at the council’s cost. While another showed the cost of airplane ticket to Erbil, which was only TRY.657, but other TRY.1876 were added, without any explanation.
A receipt of TRY.1972,960 were filed under “hosting” category, while cost of residency visa for a relative of SNC’s member reached to TRY. 594.
The surprise is that all costs were extra to salaries, which ranged between TRY.900 and €. 4200.
The documents Zaman al-Wasl obtained presented that SNC’s members used to receive medical care in expensive hospitals like the American Hospital, as the cost of X.ray and some lab test was TRY.235.
In the end, what can be said about a receipt of TRY.130 for lunch for a SNC’s member and his assistant.
