Assad forces mobilize troops for major offensive southern Syria, rebels alert

Al-Omari brigades, rebel group active in southern Syria, on Tuesday declared general mobilization to repel Syrian army's major offensive to recapture Lajat region, field sources said.

Syrian regime forces, who lost swaths of territories last April, have massed troops near rebel-held town of Busra al-Harir preparing to take back the border line with Jordan.

For over two weeks Lajat battlefront has witnessed fierce fighting between southern Front rebels and regime forces and its allied Shiite militias.

Rebels of the southern province of Daaa established moths ago the so-called Southern Front, which includes some 30,000 fighters from more than 55 mainstream opposition groups operating from the Jordanian border to the outskirts of Damascus and the Golan Heights.

Syria's conflict, now in its fourth year, has killed more than 220,000 people, a third of them civilians, and caused millions to flee.
