Artifacts' thieves sell Syrian heritage via Social Media

Translation by Yusra  Ahmed

A Facebook page openly displays artifacts like old coins, mosaics, statuses, historical gemstones and jewellery like earrings and bracelets, besides old manuscripts seemingly genuine.

It is difficult to check the genuinely of the displayed products and heritage pieces from their pictures, but the mentioned Facebook page keeps displaying more pieces and call indirectly for interested people to own them.

Attitude toward online displaying heritage and historically precious pieces has varied, some found the act as a treason to the country’s history and expressed their anger toward the page’s organizers. While others did not care, and asked for their prices.
Zaman al-Wasl expects those pieces could be of exceptionally huge value if they were genuine.

It is noticed that no information of explanation was available about the displayed items, including prices.

Syrian crisis and the regime’s neglect of monuments and not guarding them, encouraged growing of gangs interested in stealing and trading heritage which threatened the country’s history and its exceptional heritage and monuments.
