Opposition government founds cultural directorate in rebel-held Homs

The Ministry of Culture and Family Affairs in the Syrian Interim Government this week agreed to establish three directorates for education and family affairs and monuments in the Northern Countryside of Homs.

Zaman al-Wasl learnt that Samah Hadaya, the Minister of Culture and family affairs had requested from Ali al-Wali, an activist and Arabic Language teacher, to supervise the process of establishing the three directorates, in the three main towns in the Northern countryside, Rastan, Talbiseh and Holeh.

In a statement to Zaman al-Wasl, al-Wali said that a cultural committee was formed in each town to manage the directorates and other newly formed education bureaus, and Al-Wali added that in the end of June, three foundation conferences were held in the three towns.

Al-Wali mentioned that concepts like civil peace, citizenship, mercy, enhancing creativity at personal and community levels, supporting children and empowering women and youth, supporting people with special needs, war victims and elderly, are essential parts of the initial plans of the directorates.

Ali Al-wali explained that protecting the Syrian monuments and the cultural heritage are very important to protect the national identity, and that what the Ministry of Culture and Family matters aim to. He added that Homs is very rich in monuments and archaeological sites like Palmyra, Hesn castle and Katana kingdom, therefore it was very important to found a directorate to protect monument in the Northern countryside of Homs.

In his speech during the opening of the first foundation conference of the directorate in Holeh, Ahmad Abbara who was assigned to the Directorate of monuments and museums described the step as very important and showed good intention and interest of the interim government in the cultural and educational heritage of Homs, which go back for hundreds of years.

Abbara confirmed that the interim government’s decision in regard to monuments was the first step toward protecting them, as they have been subject to stealing and shelling for 4 years by the regime’s forces and militias.

Most of the monument and archaeological sites and houses have been subject to systematic stealing and destroying as well as smuggling abroad.
