Recapturing the area north of Homs would help reassert Assad's control over the main population centers of western Syria and secure territory linking Damascus to the coastal heartland of his minority Alawite sect, Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, rebels have recaptured ground in the underway fighting in rural southern Aleppo.
Syrian Revolution Co-ordinations said rebels have taken back tank battalion base and villages of Abtin, al Muhaira, al Sabiqiya and al Kassarat that were captured by regime forces early Friday.
Zaman al Wasl reporter said regime Russian air strikes hit the a field hospital in al- Hadher town, leaving huge losses. Unknown number of casualties reported in the the attack.
Dr. Abdul Aziz, refused to give his last name, said Russia has deliberately rocked the hospital to paralyze any treatment efforts as rebel-held areas witness the fiercest assault ever.
On the border north of Aleppo, Turkish warplanes shot down an unidentified drone in Turkish air space near Syria on Friday and a U.S. official said Washington believed it was of Russian origin.
