Russia and regime warplanes carry out 40 raids on northern Homs: activists

The Syrian regime and Russian warplanes have carried out more than 40 raids in the northern countryside of Homs city on Thursday, local activists said.

The regime troops backed by fighters from Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah have launched a series of ground offensives western and northwestern Syria since Russia began air strikes in the country on Sept. 30.

Zaman al Wasl reporter said the clashes are still underway in northern rural Homs when the aerial campaign keep focusing on Talbiseh and Teir Malla towns.

Meanwhile, Russian Defense Ministry official, Igor Konashenkov, on Thursday denied U.S. allegations that the Russian military had used cluster bombs in populated areas in Syria, RIA news agency reported.

Almost 80 percent of Russia's declared targets in Syria have been in areas not held by Islamic State, a Reuters analysis of Russian Defence Ministry data shows, undermining Moscow's assertions that its aim is to defeat the group.

The northern countryside side of Homs has occurred to severe aerial campaign, more than 370 people have been killed in Russian air strikes , monitoring groups said, mostly from Homs.

On Wednesday, eight rebel groups operating in northern countryside formed a coordination unit to unified military efforts to halt advances of regime troops and their allies.

Rebels who seek more coordination on the battle ground have been facing a major aerial and ground offensive by loyalists of Bashar al-Assad who flew to Moscow on Tuesday evening to personally thank Russia's Vladimir Putin for his military support, in a surprise visit that underlined how Russia has become a major player in the Middle East.

Iran has also long been a strong Syrian government ally, and the fact that Assad chose to visit Moscow before Tehran is likely to be interpreted in some circles as a sign that Russia has now emerged as Assad's most important foreign friend.
