Nusra Front kills dozens of Syrian regime troops in Aleppo

Nusra Front's Twitter accounts said dozens of Syrian regime army were killed south of Aleppo in an ambush set by the al-Qaeda-linked group.

Meanwhile, three civilians killed and tens wounded in Russian air strikes on the ISIS-held town of al Bab near Aleppo, activists said.

Rebels of southern countryside of Aleppo keep their resistance to the three-week-old offensive, seizing control of Tal al Mahrouqat near Khan Touman and al khasleh village.

The offensive has concentrated so far on clearing rebel-held areas south of Aleppo rather than the city itself, which is home to 2 million people and divided between government forces to the west and rebels in the east, Reuters reported.

A rebel source in al Shamiyeh Front told Zaman al Wasl that dozens of regime troops and their allied militia have been killed in cement factory, the powerful army stronghold, near Sheikh Said neighborhood, one of strategic supply routes for Syrian regime.

Areas around Aleppo have seen days of heavy fighting after Syrian troops backed by Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian fighters launched an offensive last week to retake territory around Aleppo from rebels and jihadist fighters.

The operation to retake areas around the northern city is one of several assaults carried out by pro-regime ground forces since Russian jets began carrying out air strikes on Sept. 30 in support of al-Assad.

Syrian troops are also trying to advance to the east of Aleppo towards Kweires military airport, aiming to break a siege of the base by Islamic State and other insurgents.

In southern province of Daraa, clashes renewed between Hezbollah militias and Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the western countryside side, activists said.

An alliance of FSA in Daraa said on Monday Russia must stop bombing rebels before they could talk about cooperating with it, saying they hadn't turned down an offer of support but Moscow must first halt its attacks.

In comments marking a shift in Russia's position, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday the Russian air force would be ready to help the "patriotic" Syrian opposition.

"We didn't turn down the offer. We just said if the Russians are serious in their offer they should stop immediately targeting our bases and targeting the civil areas," Issam al- Rayyes, spokesman for the Southern Front of the Free Syrian Army, told the BBC. (With agencies)
