Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Eqtsad- Zamana Al Wasl)- Sarah, the Syrian refugee woman in Egypt who was waiting to follow her a asylum-seeker husband to Sweden, has never expected to be dumped and divorced as the husband changed migration plans and decided to start a new life in Germany.

“when we left Damascus 3 years ago and came to Egypt, we lived very hard condition which push us to think of leaving to Europe, it was easier for my husband to go alone to Libya then to Sweden, hoping that he would be able to send me reunion documents when he got asylum."

Sarah, 26, carried on saying that months passed without an news from him, to know later that he was in Germany, to follow with an SMS informing her that she is divorced.

“I requested my parents to work on divorcing me officially to start new life, my problem is easier than others’ because I do not have any kid to suffer with me.”

Sarah’s tragedy is not the only one, it could be the least socially harmful because she has no kids, but other husbands left their wives with many children and lived in Europe with no intention to reunite them later.

Hussein Salim, A Syrian refugee in Sweden told his friend’s story who left his wife with 4 children in Jordan, and has no intention to reunite them, claiming that he does not want his children to live the life of the west and their traditions are different from the Arabs’.

Thaer, a young man used to work as Lawyer in Syria explained that cases when husbands leave their wives and children and run away has become frequent, some of them left their families in Syria and others in neighboring countries like Jordan and Lebanon, which are much harder.

I think that the crisis in Syria has negative effects on Syrians in many aspects, not only the killing, destruction and displacement, but it forced others to leave the country seeking security in neighboring countries, but many of them were not able to cover the cost of living which make them leave their former lives and their failure to start from scratch in different place, the former Lawyer explained.

About the psychological background of men who left their wives and families, Thaer explained that the war and daily tragedies the Syrians have to live during the 5-year-war made them hard-hearted and more accepting to tragedies and consider them as fates, added to that failure, desperation, depression and disappointment which increase the mercilessness and hardheartedness and made people be cruel to others even their children.

Thaer, the former Lawyer does not see that cases of husbands leaving their families had exceeded the usual levels, mentioning that many still in contact with their families, but cases of husbands who completely disappeared are rare.

Social specialist Mohammed Abdullah expressed his opinion that it is not fair to judge the practices of Syrian community in recent period, as the country in war and open to all sorts of tragedies, and usually communities in these conditions have severe changes and disassociation, out of their control.

Abdullah explained that he had not left Syria and he works on helping a group of specialists who visit families of men who left their families because their women were raped, as they try to help them to cope with the new circumstances and contact husbands to convince them to return and rescue their families.

Abdullah expressed his hope of the end of the war, which would heal lots of damage. “at the moment we only have relieves”, ended.
