GENEVA (Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian opposition's spokesperson, in a press conference held Saturday, said the proposal saying that Bashar al-Assad can stay along with 3 MPS is totally not accepted and even was not delivered by the U.N special emvoy.
"Any proposition outside Geneva 1 and outside Riyadh statement will not be accepted," said Salem al-Muslet, the spokesman of High Negotiations Committee.
Al-Muslat asserted the oppositon demands, saying: “we are talking about a transitional government with full authorities without Bashar al-Assad and those whose have committed war crimes against Syrians.”
Naser al-Hariri, member of opposition delegate to Geneva, explained in a statement to Zaman al-Wasl, “one of UN envoy Staffan de Mistura’s experts made the proposition and opposition finds it unacceptable and does not conform to the international resolution 2245. Bashar al-Assad stay in power is not accepted neither by the Syrian population nor by the opposition.”
Al-Hariri added the regime’s presented paper tackles general issues and does not address the political transition process. The regime still focuses on the formalities of procedures and general principles whereas our issue is the political transition. The timetable to implement the 2254 resolution has changed and we are supposed to reach a transitional governance body at the end of June.
On the contrary, we are near the end of the third round of negotiations and the regime still insists on discussing procedural issues.
Regarding the Russian role, al-Hariri said that the Russian have the full ability to pressure the regime, but the question is more whether the Russians have the will to pressure the regime.
Al-Hariri indicated the opposition will not withdraw from the talks and the opposition’s partner is the International Community. Regarding the feasibility of the negotiations, he said the opposition is not surprised of the regime’s behavior because it does not want to discuss a political transition since it is not in the regime’s interest. The opposition is trying to be a positive and active partner for the International Community.
Al-Hariri concluded that if the third round finished without any prospects for a solution amid the fragile cease-fire and worsening humanitarian conditions, some of the opposition might find it useless to come again to the talks, but it is early to discuss this. The opposition will support the international efforts which seek a political solution.
