Aleppo: Rebels thwart regime attack on Handarat, kill 18 militants

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels thwarted Tuesday regime attack on Handarat Camp in northern Aleppo province, killing 18 pro-regime militants, local reporter said.

Seizing Handarat district has become regime's main target since it overlooks on strategic Castillo road, the only gateway for rebel-held Aleppo.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter said 18 fighters from the Palestinian al-Quds militia had been killed in an ambush set by rebels near Handarat.

In its turn, regime warplanes have extended its aerial campaign on the war-torn province.

At least 12 people killed on Monday in ballistic missile attack on al-Sukkari neighborhood in northern Aleppo city, medics and activists say.

A family of three members were among the casualties as 20 more people were wounded, said Dr. Abu Jafar Kahil, the head of forensic department in rebel-held Aleppo.

Rebels have also taken al-Bel, border village with turkey from the Islamic State after fierce fighting, activists said.

In relevant development, President Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday Turkey will take it upon itself to deal with attacks on the border town of Kilis if it receives no outside help, in a sign Ankara may be willing to act against ISIS on its own.

"We will overcome the Islamic State. We will solve that issue ourselves if we don't receive help to prevent those rockets from hitting Kilis," Erdogan told an international meeting of ministers in Istanbul.

Kilis, which is just across the border from an ISIS-controlled area of Syria, has come under frequent rocket fire in recent weeks. Turkish officials say Ankara needs more help from the U.S.-led coalition in protecting its border.

Major powers failed to agree on a new date for peace talks between warring Syrian parties, the U.N.'s special envoy said Tuesday.

"The issue is still waiting for some type of concrete outcome of this meeting but we cannot wait too long, we want to keep the momentum," Staffan de Mistura told reporters alongside U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The powers agreed to reinforce a ceasefire across the country and to push through humanitarian aid deliveries to besieged areas, including through air drops. (With agencies)
