(Zaman al-Wasl)- Syrian rebels captured new ground from regime forces and allied militias in Jabal al-Turkman area in Latakia province as they launched the third phase of Yarmouk Battle, killing and injuring dozens, activists said Sunday.
Activist Majd al-Naji reported that 17 regime personnel were killed in the battles on Sunday and scores injured. Rebels bombed regime locations in Jabal al-Akrad before raiding these locations, according to the plan of the rebels.
Yarmouk Operation Room released a statement confirming the liberation of Qabqaya, al-Saraf, Jabal al-Qalaa villages and other points in surrounding of al-Bayda village in addition to liberating Marj al-Zawia village in Jabal al-Akrad area.
Activist Majd al-Naji told Zaman al-Wasl, rebels now focus on liberating al-Bayda village and its mountain because it is high up and looks into many rebels’ locations, roads, and supply roads.
Activists reported a collapse in regime army which led to withdrawal from many locations, but still defending fiercely al-Bayda village and its hill.
In turn, a field leader in the First Coastal Division promised al-Bayda will be liberated in the coming hours confirming it is besieged from three directions.
The leader who spoke on condition of anonymity said the rebels are determined to continue fighting to liberate all territories lost to the regime favor.
Rebels' gain was a rare in Latakia since Russia intervened in the five-year Syrian conflict on the side of Bashar al-Assad last September.
Experts linked regime's retreat in the Assad heartland province with the revived relations between Russia and Turkey, saying Russia has lessen its support for Damascus what gives the upper hand for rebels in Latakia battles.
Moscow said Thursday it may negotiate Assad's future but not in the meantime.
On Friday, rebels seized the strategic town of Kansaba and and array of hilltops that overlook on Salma town.
