Reporting by Faris al-Rifai

(Zaman Al Wasl) A number of Syrian activists and organizations working in the field of documentation, justice, and human rights launched a campaign under the title, “Syria with No Mines” that aims at raising awareness within Syrian society of the danger of mines, unexploded ammunition, and the remnants of war (booby-traps, and improvised explosive devices).

The campaign is being launched in the city of Manbij and its countryside as it indicated in the campaign statement that this city is witnessing a tragic humanitarian situation and confirmed the daily human losses due to the remnants of war and the mines planted in the city and its countryside.

According to special sources from the campaign, thousands of mines have been removed so far and there are still thousands more planted in the city of Manbij and its countryside.

The statement reported from the Syrian Institute for Justice the death of over 104 persons as a result of the explosion of mines in residential parts of the city, other than the tens of injuries and cases of amputation.

The campaign overseers have called on all the media committees and civil initiatives in the city of Manbij and its countryside to support the campaign and help it reach all persons concerned, especially civilians with the hope of preserving the resident’s lives, cleaning up the city and its countryside from all mines and remnants of war.

The campaign statement demanded that all international institutions and organizations concerned, and the United Nations bodies intervene immediately to put a stop to the daily suffering that threatens the lives of tens of thousands of civilians inside Syria.

On Thursday August 18 2016, the Syrian Institute for Justice issued a report until that date, documenting the number of victims of landmines in Manbij since the start of the military operation led by the Democratic Syrian Forces on the city that lies east of Aleppo. The report revealed that 678 persons died at the hands of the International Alliance and the Syrian Democratic Forces militia, and 222 people died at the hands of the Islamic State following bombings, field executions, and death by landmines.
