U.S. air strikes kill 100 Fateh al-Sham fighters in Aleppo

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 100 Fateh al-Sham fighters have been killed late on Thursday in U.S. air strikes hit a training camp in northern Aleppo province, a U.S. defense official said.

The strike was carried out Thursday by an Air Force B-52 bomber and an undisclosed number of U.S. drone aircraft, the official said. The official was not authorized to publicly announce the attack and so spoke on condition of anonymity, according to AP.

The devastating strikes on Sheikh Suleiman camp in the western countryside left dozens more wounded as the United States step up its aerial campaign on the formerly known Nusra Front over its links to al-Qaeda.

Powerful Nour Eddin al-Zinki rebel group said three fighters were killed in the attack.

Four more civilians have been killed in air strikes on Rasm Alees in the southern countryside.

On Wednesday, a US-led coalition air strike killed a top leader of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. Four other fighters of the group were also killed in the strike on Idlib province, local reports said.

Abu Ibrahim al-Tunsi, the Tunisian jihadist, was reportedly a leading member of Fateh al-Sham.

US-led forces have targeted the splinter group's leadership in Syria in the past as well. In early January, the coalition succeeded in eliminating Abu Omar al-Turkistani, a military commander, and Abu Ali al-Tunsi, a security official.

In 2016, coalition strikes killed Abu Afghan al-Masri, an Egyptian, Abu Faraj al-Masri, also an Egyptian, and Abu Omar Saraqeb, a Syrian jihadist, all leading the militant group in different capacities, the news agency reported.
