U.S. depends on local agents in tracking Fath al-Sham commanders

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Well-informed sources said that U.S. air force depend on a network of agents on the Syrian ground who provide locations of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham and foreign fighters.

The source, who refused to disclose his name for security concerns, told Zaman al-Wasl the greatest evidence of the existence of agents is the recent targeting of the commander in Jabhat Fateh al-Sham despite the high level of protection and security he enjoyed. The commander did not use a mobile phone or any form of social media.

The source, who is close to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, suggested that agents for the International Alliance photographed the headquarters of the first command officers and an air strike subsequently targeted the Jabhat commanders in Sarmada and Saraqib.
The source proposed that reconnaissance planes followed the commanders from the time they left the headquarters and then the Alliance targeted them while they were en route.

The source pointed out that mobile telephones are “the first spies” as mobile telephone have been used in several cases to pinpoint Fateh al-Sham commander or foreign fighters’ locations to enable the alliance to execute air strikes against them.

The source, who works in the field of security in northern Syria, pointed out that the Alliance is observing and targeting all people dealing with Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, commanders and Front members, in addition to foreign fighters unconnected with the group. The source told Zaman al-Wasl, Abu Mosaab al-Jazairi, who commanded a group of foreign fighters that was not subordinate to the Jabhat, was recently targeted in an aerial strike in a village in northern Syria.

The source denied that there is any security plan that can protect the commanders of Fateh al-Sham and its members from the Alliance airstrikes due to the “International Intelligence agencies breaching this group’s ranks.” The source added that the Alliance have the coordinates of most of the factions’ headquarters and includes these locations in the air strike plans.

The US targeted a training camp in Idlib province killing over 100 Fateh al-Sham fighters on Thursday according to a Pentagon spokesman. The recent air strikes come as key members of the Syrian opposition factions gather in Astana for peace talks with the Syrian regime. Other opposition factions have criticized Jabhat Fateh al-Sham for its actions jeopardizing the peace talks.
