Displaced Iraqis flee to Hasaka as Mosul battles continue

(Zaman Al Wasl)- More than 108,000 people have been displaced from Iraq since the beginning of Mosul battle three months ago, they suffer difficult living condition in camps they live in, especially the camp of al-Hol near Hasaka northern Syria.

Number of refugees in the camp have increased to more than 10 folds during the last two months at average of 20-30 families a day, and roughly, 4 families live in the same tent, without mattresses or blankets, according to Farhan Saleh Torky, Director of Human Right organisation in Syria.

In his talk to Zaman al-Wasl, Torky added that about 1500 refugees had waited for days last week at the barrier of Rajam Salibi before letting them to the camp of al-Hol, under claims that Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were checking names.

Torky mentioned that the organisation is trying to reach to an agreement to transfer Iraqi people from the camp of al-Hol to safe areas inside Iraq, especially with Iraqi Kurdistan. He confirmed that returning to Iraq is the desire of people live in al-Hol camp.

The director mentioned that many children and elderly had died at the border near the barrier of Rajam Salibi and were buried there.

Torky detailed that escaping families follow too dangerous and mined routes with risk of bandits, added to the need to pay huge amount of money to human traffickers to reach to Rajam Salibi barrier, were they live in very difficult condition lacks of almost all essential requirements, causing infectious disease, diarrhoea and vomiting leading to dehydration and many of the die.

Reaching to the camp of al-Hol does not alleviate their suffering, as there is no medical care, hygiene negligence and lack of medicine or any support of aid organisation.

The United Nations High commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated that almost 108,000 Iraqi people have been displaced due to clashes between ISIS and the Iraqi army since the beginning of Mosul’s battle October 17, 2016.
