ISIS launches attack on Kuweiris military airbase in Aleppo

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State fighters launched attack on regime-held Kuweiris military airbase in northern Aleppo province, the group’s Amaq news agency said Thursday.

The attack on Kuweiris, It was used for educational purposes mainly, is fourth on regime bases in few weeks by ISIS. No casualties were reported.

The regime army said Thursday that recent advances against ISIS northeast of Aleppo were a starting point for further operations to drive the extremist group back and extend government control in the area.

The army's general command said in a statement it had recently recaptured more than 30 towns and farms, confirming advances towards the town of al-Bab which have brought government forces close to areas where Turkish-backed fighters are separately fighting ISIS.

Last November, the regime military deployed a number of Pantsir-S short to medium range air defense systems in Kuweires base.

The aim of this move, according to pro-government websites, is to defend the government forces in Aleppo from the Turkish Air Force that has been supporting the pro-Ankara rebel groups’ advance on the ISIS-controlled town of al-Bab in the province of Aleppo.

Also,, up to 1,000 Syrian army soldiers arrived the Kuweires Military Airbase to reinforce the regime forces involved in military operations in Aleppo city. Pro-government sources argue that Syrian soldiers have been continuing to arrive to the area.

On Tuesday, 7 regime officers, including three military engineers, killed in an ISIS attack on Sayqal military airbase east of Damascus, Amaq agency and pro-regime media said.

Amaq said the Islamic State's militiamen have taken control of air defense bastions near the airport, 75km (50 miles) east of the capital, killing and wounding dozens.

Pro-regime social media pages mourned 7 army personnel, including three engineers most of them form coastal area.

The Islamic State has also waged an attack on regime forces and allied militias north of T4 military airport in eastern Homs, killing brigadier general and lieutenant along with 11 more.

The Syrian regime has moved most of its fighters jets from the embattled military airport over fears the Islamic State will succeed in taking the strategic base in Syria desert, sources said.

The military sources said 20 Su-24 and Su-22 were transferred to the Iran-controlled airport of al-Shuairat in eastern Homs. 3 Gazelle helicopters have also left T4.

Backed by heavy aerial bombing and National defense militia, the Assad forces controlled al-Qaryatin road, key supply route to T4 airport.
