At least 160 regime army officers, soldiers killed in June

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 160 officers and soldiers from Homs, Latakia and Hama provinces were killed last June in clashes with the Islamic State and rebels, pro-regime media outlets said.

The death toll included 39 officers who mostly killed by ISIS in the Syrian desert, also known as Badiya, that extends over 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 square miles) from central Syria to the borders with Iraq and Jordan to the east and southeast.

On Saturday, Two top army officers killed in an explosive device planted by the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Aleppo province on Saturday, according to social media activists.

M. General Wahib Sakr and his fellow Ghassan Rached along with an officer and driver were killed when the explosive device detonated near their car southeastern Maskana town.

Sakr gained fame for leading campaign of Kuwairis military airport in Aleppo last year.

Last week, the commander of regime army in al-Badiyat M.General Fuad Khaddour was also killed in al-Arak area near Palmyra desert, 26 miles, 40 km east of Homs city, according to pro-regime media.

Liwa al-Quds, pro-regime militia fighting the Islamic State also mourned 17 militants killed in June in clashes with ISIS northeast Palmyra, according to statement posted online.

Fatimiuoun militia, mostly Afghans, lost 11 militants in the last week of June in Aleppo countryside.

The Iran-backed militia said its fighters, mostly Palestinians, had played key role in the Syrian army advances in the last few weeks that enabled the regime for the first time to reach the border with Iraq and to take ground in Deir Ezzor and Raqqa provinces.
