Syria and Türkiye expand academic cooperation with new higher education agreement

Damascus, Aug. 6 (SANA) Syria and Türkiye signed a framework cooperation agreement in the fields of higher education and scientific research following talks on Wednesday between Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi and Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) President Erol Özvar, attended by a delegation from the ministry.

In a post published on his official Facebook page, al-Halabi said the agreement reflects the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their academic partnership and advancing scientific research cooperation in a way that serves their mutual interests and supports the development of higher education systems in both countries.

The minister expressed Syria‘s and the ministry’s appreciation for Türkiye‘s role, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in supporting the higher education sector during the years of the Syrian revolution, particularly through the establishment of branches of Turkish universities in northern Syria. He said the initiative enabled tens of thousands of Syrian students to continue their university education under difficult circumstances and helped preserve the continuity of their academic studies.

The discussions covered a range of issues of mutual interest, including strengthening cooperation between Syrian and Turkish universities, exchanging academic expertise, developing scientific research, enhancing quality assurance and accreditation, and expanding scientific partnerships between Syrian and Turkish higher education institutions.

At the end of July, al-Halabi announced that the ministry would conduct an official visit to Türkiye on Aug. 5 to continue coordination regarding Turkish universities operating in northern Syria.
