Syrian regime army takes new ground from rebels at Jordanian border

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The regime army and its allies seized control of nine positions at Syria’s border with Jordan, expanding their control at the southern frontier, Reuters said on Saturday.

The captured border positions were located to the southeast of Damascus, the report said, adding that militants had been killed and wounded during the attack. It did not identify the rebels, or say when the positions had been captured.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite group, is fighting in support of the Syrian government, which is making rapid territorial gains against rebels in southern and eastern Syria.

The advance followed the withdrawal of Ahmed Abdo Martyrs Forces and Osoud al-Sharqiya due to heavy pressure by the U.S., source told Zaman al-Wasl.

Moscow and Washington have coordinated of retreat of rebel to Rakban refugee camp at the Jordanian border as both parties seek to endorse a de-escalation zone deal in along the border with Iraq and Jordan south of Syria, giving the upper hand to regime forces.

On September 4,  the U.S. army and through its joint task command in Jordan demanded the two rebel groups to withdraw to Jordan, saying this move will serve the de-escalation zone agreement as their defeat is inevitable.
 
The Joint Operation Room, based in Amman, that leads rebel factions in southern Syria, said it seek to me another ceasefire deal with the Assad regime.
 
Commander from Osoud al-Sharqiya said the regional and International powers had pressed on them to end fight and to launch attacks on ISIS instead.
 
Ahmed Abdo Martyrs Forces said the ultimate goal of the Assad army's push in al-Badia was to link its forces with Iraq's militias on the other side of the border.
 
Since May, the regime army has been moving large numbers of troops to Badia region on the country's border with Iraq and Jordan. 
 
In August, Jaish al-Ashaer, the Army of Tribes, withdrew from its posts in Badia near Suweida city, in a surprise move granted regime army more territory.
