FSA founder braces tribes' unity in fighting Assad, Kurdish militias

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Colonel Riad al-Asaad, founder of Free Syrian Army, said the new tribal bloc amid the armed opposition has turned a powerful arm that can hamper the Assad regime and its allied militias.

The statement of the former Colonel in the Syrian Air Force who defected in July 2011, came in the second day of the Syrian tribes conference in Istanbul where 250 tribal figures met since Sunday in a reunion meeting seeking unity and role in Syria post-war.

Al-Asaad told Zama, al-Wasl that the tribes unity will reflect in better way on the Free Syrian Army  since the tribesmen highly involved in fighting Assad forces, ISIS and kUrdish militias.

A total of 60 tribes were represented in the conference with participation of senior opposition figures, according to Zaman al-Wasl reporter.

Imad al-Issa al-Dulaimi, head of al-Dulaim tribe delegation told Zaman al-Wasl that the conference had set a framework strengthening the stance of Syrian tribes and building more common ground.

Al-Dulaimi asserted on the unity of the Syrian land, saying the principles of the Syrian revolution and Geneva resolution where no role for al-Assad in Syria's future.

The convened tribes seek to form one bloc that can be active in eastern Syria as the Kurdish and Shiite militias are expanding their power.

The tribes have been neglected, sidelined and exploited by the Baathist regime in Damascus for decades but in a democratic Syria that will certainly change. Members of the tribes inside and outside the country are organising themselves and have certain expectations when the regime falls, according to the US-based analyst Hassan Hassan.
