US-led coalition sets up new base in Deir Ezzor

(Zaman Al Wasl)- US-backed International Coalition is building a military base in Deir  Ezzor province, topping the number of its bases in eastern Syria to five, local activist told Zaman al-Wasl Friday.

The International Coalition set up the new base in the town of al-Hajeen, once the main Daesh stronghold in the oil-rich province, activist Taj al-Allaw said.

The coalition has intensified its military presence at the Iraqi border in the last few weeks.

Also in Deir Ezzor, Syria's second largest oilfield started operating again after almost one year since the US-backed Kurdish forces took the oil-rich area from Daesh in eastern Syria, sources and satellite images showed.

The Tanak oilfield, which contains about 150 wells, fell under the control the SYrian Democratic Force last November after fierce clashes with Daesh.

the oilfield is located near the border with Iraq with a crude oil production up to 40,000 barrels per day (B/D).

Source said the SDF is supplying the Syrian regime with the crude oil of al-Tanak field.

The YPG-ed forces took most of oil fields from Daesh in a year of major offensive which has been backed by the US-led coalition airstrikes.

Many of Syria's most productive oil fields - including al-Omar, Tanak, Ward, Afra, Kewari, Jafra, Jarnuf, Azrak, Kahar, Sueytat and Galban are located east of the Euphrates River.

Together, these strategic oilfields are estimated to account for roughly one-third of Syria's total energy production, according to Anadolu agency.
