PARIS (Zaman Al Wasl)- Representatives of the Syrian opposition’s High Negotiations Committee stressed on the importance of the "political process" in a meeting with Syrians abroad held in Paris last Monday.
The revolution is not only ‘military battles’, said a member of the negotiating body and former header of the Syrian National Coalition, Hadi al-Bahra, in response to Zaman al-Wasl’s query on the documents owned by the opposition that makes it able to form a new international front and to move the stagnant political process, which is limited to the Constitutional Committee.
The negotiations have been stalled for many months as a result of the inflexible position of the Committee and the rigidity of the regime.
Therefore, there is now a political process between the opposition and the United Nations, who have presented visions, papers and documents to be used in the negotiation process, such as the 12 Living Intra-Syrian Essential Principles paper. It was developed to become an international paper governing any upcoming constitutional draft or the political process, and contains two important clauses: the reconstruction of the army and security forces; even the Sochi conference has adopted the 12-point plan.
Al-Bahra stressed that the reference of the opposition is Security Council Resolution 2118, which includes the adoption of the Geneva Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2254, stressing that they are not a “concession” committee.
Al-Bahra revealed the intention to establish a new group for the Syrian file, including the activities of “Astana Trio” Small Group” and “veto powers of the Security Council.” It is the vision of the international envoy, Geir O. Pedersen, who saw the need for an international consensus, especially between the relevant and influential parties, pointing out that all major and regional countries have agreed to the formation of this group as long as it does not dissolve neither Astana nor Small Group.
The agenda of the delegation of the committee headed by Dr. Nasr Hariri, included a meeting with members of Small Group, in Paris on Monday, during which they discussed the field and political issues in the Syrian arena.
Dr. Ibrahim al-Jabbawi, member of the committee, said that the delegation was briefed on the current situation, focusing on aggression by the Assad’s forces and the Russian Air Force on the north-west of Syria, the setback to attackers, despite the use of all types of weapons including chlorine gas, and the disastrous consequences of this aggression on civilians.
He added that the delegation expressed the steadfastness of the rebels and the attempts of the regime to evade the political process, hindering it with the support of Russia. He also referred to the Iranian infiltration into the fabric of Syrian life after the corruption and murder carried out but its militias. He pointed out that the delegation of the Commission requested the support of Small Group countries to stand up to Assad-Russian intransigence in the political process.
Al-Jabbawi explained that the Small Group representatives stressed the compatibility of views with the Committee, stressing on the support of the humanitarian aspects, especially the issue of detainees and the situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
He concluded his statement to Zaman al-Wasl saying that the Small Group renewed its support for the political process that there is no military solution to the Syrian cause and "This is what they seek to deliver to the Russians.”
