Assad forces press to overrun Al Waer, last rebels' stronghold in Homs

The embattled neighborhood of al-Waer in Homs still a main target for Basher al-Assad’s sporadic mortar fire, activists reported.

Assad’s forces have intensified efforts to overrun the last stronghold of Homs, Syria’s revolution cradle after ten days of evacuation deal.

Homs became an urban battlefield, and remained so until last week when a complex truce began, allowing rebel forces to peacefully leave and the Assad government to retake full control of the city.

Residents who had fled the fighting were allowed to return last week, to see their homes and recover what they can -- most of the city is now unfit for habitation, and reconstruction will be necessary on a massive scale if Homs is to become a city once again. Gathered here are many recent images, as well as a few from 2011 paired with 2014 photos taken in the same places to show the difference three years of war can make.

Meanwhile, at least 162,000 people have been killed in Syria‘s three-year-old conflict, a monitoring group said on Monday, and thousands more are missing after being captured by Bashar al-Assad’s forces and rebels trying to overthrow him.

The pro-opposition, British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said losses among fighters on the government side were higher than those among pro-rebel groups, and estimated that at least 54,000 civilians had been killed since the conflict began.
