Children rescued from rubble after Syria shelling

Syrian regime artillery shells struck a village in the last rebel enclave in the country's northwest on Thursday, killing seven members of the same family, including four children, rescue workers and a war monitor said.

The shelling is part of an ongoing military escalation in the area covered since last year by a cease-fire, sponsored by Russia and Turkey.

It is not clear what the cause of the escalation was, that has so far killed at least 17 children this month, before Thursday, according to figures confirmed by the U.N. Children agency, UNICEF.

The rescue workers in opposition areas, known as White Helmets, said the shells landed in the village of Ibleen in southern Idlib province, killing seven people, including a mother and her four children.

The White Helmet volunteers pulled out bodies from under the rubble of the house that was destroyed with the family inside.

Seven other people were injured, according to the group.

This attack brings the total of those killed in government strikes on the rebel enclave to 21, including 11 children and six women, since Saturday, according to the Observatory's records.

The strike on Thursday came on the last day of Eid Al-Adha holiday, one of Islam's most important feasts.

It follows other deadly strikes in the rebel-held enclave Saturday, that killed seven children, a White Helmet volunteer and five women.
