At least 2 dead in explosions in northern Syria

Two explosions on Tuesday hit a town in northern Syria held by Turkey-backed opposition fighters, killing at least two and wounding 18 others, the Syrian Civil Defense said.

The civil defense, a team of first responders also known as White Helmets, said the wounded in the northern Syrian town of Jarablus included four children and two women.

They gave no further details.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the blast was caused by a motorcycle rigged with explosives.

Syria's conflict that broke out in March 2011 has left hundreds of thousands dead and displaced half the country's pre-war population of 23 million, including more than 5 million refugees outside the war-torn nation.

Last week, United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said her office has documented the deaths of 350,209 people — civilians and combatants — in Syria's civil war.

She said the real number is almost certainly far higher.
