Ailing electricity condition will continue as no substitutes: Minister

The Syrian Electricity Minister stated that the best solution to overcome the bad electrical reality in the country lies in the use of renewable energies, such as installing solar water heaters, photovoltaic collectors and some small electric turbines on the roofs of industrial facilities and others.

Observers considered Minister Ghassan Al-Zamil's statement to "Tishreen" newspaper that he cuts off hope for an improvement in the electrical situation in the country using conventional generation energy, especially after he presented the challenges facing this sector and the difficulty of solving them in the foreseeable future.

Al-Zamil blamed the deterioration of the electrical situation on the economic sanctions, which, he said, greatly affected the electricity supply to vital sectors that touch citizens' lives, such as hospitals, clinics and public service centers.

Al-Zamil also indicated that during the previous ten years the electricity sector had suffered great losses, pointing out that Syria had about 11 generating stations, some of which were completely out of service, such as the Zayzoun station and the Aleppo thermal station, and some of it partially were out of serivce but had been rehabilitated as the thermal stations of Mahrada and Tishreen.

According to the minister, the generation capacity in Syria before the war amounted to more than 6,000 megawatts, but after the war and due to the blockade, a number of generating stations went out of service and maintenance was delayed for others, in addition to the shortage of oil derivatives needed by the generation stations.

This led to a reduction in generation to the limits of 2,200 megawatts, because most of the oil and gas fields in northern Syria are under the control of the US-backed Kurdish forces, which impedes the supply of the quantities of fuel needed to restart and generate power in the required quantities, he said.
