Damascus, Apr.18 (SANA) Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that its specialized units have dismantled an “active terrorist cell” and arrested five of its members.
The ministry in a statement said “the coordinated security operation units could seize a cache of weapons and military equipment that included various firearms, grenades, military gear, ammunition, and quantities of explosive materials and detonators prepared for use in planned attacks aimed at undermining security in the area”.
Preliminary data indicated that members of the cell were involved in assembling explosive devices, preparing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and rigging mines, and had received specialized training abroad from entities experienced in explosives manufacturing, with the aim of carrying out acts of sabotage targeting security and stability.
A security source later told SANA that the dismantled cell was linked to another terrorist group that attempted to carry out a sabotage attack by planting an explosive device near the home of a religious figure in the vicinity of the Mariamite Church in Bab Touma on April 11.
