Syria investigates clashes with ISIS cell in Rankous

Damascus, Oct. 23 (SANA) Syria’s Interior Ministry said it is closely following public reactions and questions raised by residents of Rankous regarding the security operation conducted on Thursday targeting a cell linked to the ISIS terrorist organization.

In a statement issued Friday, the ministry said the operation was initially intended to execute arrest and summons warrants against suspects for questioning, based on precise intelligence.

The security force came under heavy, direct gunfire upon arrival, resulting in the martyrdom of two Internal Security members and injuries to five, the ministry said. The force was consequently required to respond firmly to the sources of fire in accordance with established rules of engagement.

Preliminary investigations with those detained are continuing under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities, the statement said. The ministry pledged to announce the findings and present evidence to the public once the legal procedures are complete.

The ministry stressed that the safety and security of Rankous residents remain a top priority, describing their protection and the preservation of national stability as its primary responsibility.

It urged the public to verify information, await the official investigation findings and avoid being misled by accounts that seek to pre-empt justice or distort the facts.

Earlier on Thursday, the Internal Security forces, in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, carried out the operation against an ISIS cell in Rankous. Internal Security forces said the operation ended with five cell members neutralized and six others arrested. Weapons and explosive belts were also seized.
