Monitoring group presents 9 recommendations to improve living conditions of Palestinian refugees

The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria presented 9 recommendations that would improve the general situation of Palestinian refugees from Syria, improve their conditions, and secure a safe and dignified life for them.

The AGPS addressed the international community and UNRWA in a report entitled "Palestinians of Syria: Pains and Hopes," calling for urgent relief and humanitarian support for Palestinian refugees inside and outside Syria in light of the restrictions, siege, poverty and disease they are subjected to.

The London-based group called for the rapid disclosure of the fate of detainees and missing persons inside Syria, ensuring fair trials and humane conditions of detention for detainees, and the immediate release of women, children and the elderly.

The AGPS held the Assad regime fully responsible for the lives of the detainees, especially in light of the continuing news of the detainees being subjected to severe torture and rape, and the death of thousands of them in prisons.

The monitoring group stressed the need to expedite the reconstruction of the Palestinian camps, the restoration of infrastructure such as water, electricity, transportation and communications, and the lifting of restrictions imposed on the return of displaced refugees to their homes, and to secure their return as soon as possible, especially in the camps of Yarmouk, Daraa and Handarat.

The AGPS stressed the importance of rehabilitating schools and educational centers in all Palestinian camps and gatherings, and facilitating student enrollment in the educational process.

It also called on the International Community with all its components, including institutions, organizations and countries, to stand up to their responsibilities towards the Palestinian refugees, and to work to increase the funding provided to UNRWA to ensure its continuity and fulfill its duties stipulated in its founding charter.

UNRWA called for increasing the support provided to Palestinian refugees displaced from Syria to Lebanon, Jordan and the Gaza Strip, who suffer from fragile humanitarian and legal conditions, in addition to the refugees inside Syria, in order to guarantee them a decent life in light of the complex crises they are experiencing.

The AGPS stressed the need for UNRWA staff and services to reach the areas of northern Syria, as it is a Syrian territory under its legal jurisdiction and includes a large segment of Palestinian refugees displaced from Palestinian camps and gatherings, and suffers from extremely difficult humanitarian conditions.

The Palestinian group noted the need to work on developing UNRWA's performance and expanding its services to include providing physical and legal protection to Palestinian refugees in Turkey and Egypt, given the presence of large numbers of registered refugees who do not receive any kind of protection.
