Turkey intends to print official documents for Syrians at new administration request

Turkish media reported that Turkey intends to print new identity cards, passports and driving licenses for Syrian citizens in response to a request from the new Syrian administration.

The new administration in Syria also requested assistance in some services from Turkey, from which it received the greatest support to liberate the country from the former regime, and the tgrthaber website indicated that the new administration wants support in printing official documents for its citizens such as identity cards, passports and driving licenses in Turkey.

While it was said that there is a lack of infrastructure for printing such official documents in Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave instructions to all ministers regarding the demands of the new administration.

In this regard, the relevant institutions have begun preparations to print identity cards, passports and driving licenses for Syrians in Turkey. According to the same source, an application similar to the smart passport, chip ID and driving license system used in Turkey will also be provided to Syrians.

In a related context, after the regime stabilizes in Syria, entry and exit to Turkey will be linked to the visa system.

Since the "temporary protection status" for those who do not want to return to their country will be lifted after a while, studies are also being conducted on how to find a formula for those who will remain in Turkey.

According to the assessments, it is stated that there may be a residence permit, work permit or short-term visa application for Syrians who will reside in Turkey.

70% of Syrians want to return.

Meanwhile, a new study reported that the percentage of those who want to return to their country, which was 45 percent, has reached 70 percent after the developments in Syria.

A report by the Turkish newspaper Sabah stated that Turkish institutions are working to meet the demands of the new administration in Syria, which include printing those documents, in addition to the status of Syrians returning from Turkey.

The Directorate of Migration Management will establish offices in Syria to coordinate the entry and exit of Syrians in Turkey with the new Syrian officials in order to ensure that refugees do not face difficulties in identifying themselves.

The newspaper added that Turkey is also working on studying the status of Syrians who choose to return or stay.

Syrians will be stripped of their refugee status and Turkey will apply the same procedures as other foreigners, meaning Syrian citizens will have to use their passports and apply for a visa to enter Turkey.

However, visa procedures for Syrians are expected to be easier than those for other countries.

*25,000 Syrians return home

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced earlier this week that more than 25,000 Syrians had returned to their country between December 9 and 23. This represents a record number compared to an average of 11,000 returns per month.

The numbers have risen dramatically since the Syrian revolution toppled the Baathist regime of Bashar al-Assad after years of war that displaced millions.

According to a recent opinion poll, at least 70% of Syrians in Turkey want to return to their homeland, compared to 45% before the fall of Assad.

The vast majority of Syrian refugees in Türkiye are optimistic about the future of Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, and a large number of them are keen to return to their homeland.
