EU supports Syria's unity, Damascus calls for reopening embassies

The European Union confirmed on Tuesday its support for Syria and its territorial integrity, while Damascus called on it to reopen its embassies in the country.

This came during a meeting between the Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union in the capital, Damascus, Michael Unmacht, and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said, in a statement via the X platform, that Unmacht stressed "the need to enhance security and peace and the need for the unity and independence of Syrian territory."

He also stressed "the European Union's support for the peaceful transfer of power in Syria," praising what the government of Mohammad al-Bashir has provided, according to the statement.

Al-Shaibani stressed "the need to strengthen diplomatic relations with the European Union and open a new page after the fall of the former regime" headed by Bashar al-Assad (2000-2024).

The minister called for "reopening the embassies of the Union (27 countries) in Syria and activating their role," according to the statement.

Most Arab and foreign countries have closed their embassies in Damascus, in protest against the Assad regime's use of bloody military repression since March 2011 against anti-Assad protesters demanding a peaceful transfer of power.

Regional and international officials flock to Damascus daily to hold talks with officials of the new Syrian administration, and to try to explore the country's new policies.
