Saudi Arabia launches air bridge to aid Syria

The Saudi King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center launched an air bridge on Wednesday to support the Syrian people, who are suffering from extreme poverty due to the near-total collapse of the country's economy.

Earlier, the center announced in a post on the X platform the launch of two relief planes provided to the Syrian people, carrying "food, shelter and medical supplies."

It said that the two planes are heading to "Damascus International Airport to contribute to alleviating the effects of the difficult conditions that the Syrian people are currently going through."

This came hours after the center announced preparations to launch a relief air bridge provided by Saudi Arabia to Syria.

The official news agency "SPA" said that the center "operated the first vanguard of Saudi relief bridges provided to the brotherly Syrian people from King Khalid International Airport" in Riyadh.

It quoted the advisor to the Royal Court and general supervisor of the center, Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, as saying that "the air relief bridge that was launched today will be followed by another land bridge in the coming few days, and will provide urgent relief to our Syrian brothers."

The Saudi agency indicated that these efforts come as "an extension of the continuous support provided by Saudi Arabia to the brothers in Syria."

For its part, the official Syrian news agency "SANA" reported the arrival of a Saudi humanitarian and relief aid plane to Damascus International Airport.

"SANA" did not mention details about the mechanism for distributing this aid, which comes at a time when Syria is suffering from major economic challenges coinciding with the near-total collapse of the economic structure as a result of the policies implemented by the Bashar al-Assad regime over many years, especially with the start of the civil war in 2011.
