Relief aid from 3 Arab countries arrives at Damascus airport

Relief aid planes arrived at Damascus International Airport in southern Syria on Monday, coming from three Arab countries, to help address the humanitarian situation there after the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

This came according to official statements issued by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait.

The official Saudi Press Agency "SPA" reported that "the tenth relief plane arrived at Damascus International Airport".

It pointed out that the plane carries food, shelter and medical supplies as part of the Saudi air bridge operated by the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid (official) to help the Syrian people.

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced, in a statement, that "a plane belonging to the Qatari Armed Forces arrived at Damascus Airport carrying humanitarian aid including 37 tons of food supplies, provided by the Qatar Development Fund".

The ministry explained that "this aid comes as a continuation of the air bridge operated by Qatar to provide relief to our brothers in Syria and contribute to addressing their humanitarian situation".

She stressed that "this is the fifth Qatari plane to land at Damascus International Airport, and the tenth within the Qatari air bridge that Doha recently launched."

In the same context, the second relief plane from the Kuwaiti air bridge arrived at Damascus Airport, carrying 33 tons of aid and medical supplies, according to the country's official news agency "KUNA."

The agency explained that this aid is organized by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, and in cooperation with other ministries within the "Kuwait by Your Side" campaign.

It quoted the Kuwaiti Assistant Foreign Minister Hamad Al-Mashaan as saying that the plane comes "within a relief air bridge that will continue during the current week and the coming days with the participation of many official government donor agencies, in addition to Kuwaiti humanitarian and charitable organizations active in the relief field."

Arab relief aid continues after Syrian factions took control of the capital Damascus on December 8, and before that, other cities, thus ending 61 years of Baath Party rule, and 53 years of Assad family control.

Syrians are suffering from extremely difficult economic conditions, as a result of the war waged against them by Bashar al-Assad's regime since the outbreak of the revolution in their country in March 2011.
