Syrian forces capture 15 SDF forces and take control of oil fields near Raqqa

Syrian forces captured 15 fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after violent clashes near oil wells in the "Al-Raqqa" desert south of Raqqa, northeastern Syria, activists said on Thursday.

The forces affiliated with the new administration made significant field progress in the southern countryside of Raqqa, where they took control of a number of sites, villages and oil fields, most notably: (Bir Abu Kubra, Al-Qusayr wells, Bir Al-Amala, Bir Al-Sadran, Abu Tabat, Rajm Iblis, Al-Issawi, Sheikh Hamdan, Ajl Al-Hamr, Al-Raqqa).

Yesterday, Wednesday, the forces of the Military Operations Administration succeeded in imposing their control over the "Al-Zamla" area, rich in oil fields, south of the town of "Al-Mansoura" in the Syrian desert, southwest of Raqqa.

The factions led by the Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham forces were also able to connect the "Al-Raqqa" road with the town of "Al-Kom", which strengthened their strategic positions in the region.

Swathes of north and northeast Syria are controlled by a Kurdish-led administration whose de facto army, the SDF, spearheaded the fight that helped defeat ISIS in Syria in 2019.

Turkey accuses the main component of the SDF, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), of being affiliated with the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) at home, which both Washington and Ankara consider a “terrorist” group.

Turkey has staged multiple operations in SDF areas since 2016, and Ankara-backed groups have captured several Kurdish-held towns in northern Syria in recent weeks.
