Syrian sailors stuck at home due to travel restrictions imposed by former regime

Dozens of Syrian sailors complained about being banned from traveling, which hinders their work and livelihood, due to restrictions dating back to the former Assad regime.

In a letter sent by one of the sailors to Zaman al-Wasl, he explained that they work on board commercial ships and belong to the Syrian Sailors Syndicate, and that their livelihood and that of their families depends on their frequent travel to transport goods internationally.

The sailor pointed out that they were officers in the Syrian Navy and were discharged from service or defected many years ago; today they are banned from traveling and the travel ban has been applied to them since the days of the former regime.

He stressed that they are citizens who abide by the law and are subject to the will of the state, and are not criminals to be banned from traveling, noting that they submitted requests to remove the travel ban, but their requests were met with rejection or suspension.

The sailors appealed to the Minister of Interior to lift the travel ban imposed on them since the era of the former regime, indicating that they are ready to present themselves to any party for investigation and to ensure that their record is clean and that they are not involved in any crime or violation of the law.

This complaint comes amid the continuing repercussions of the former regime in the lives of Syrians, as many of them still suffer from restrictions imposed on them since that time.

It is worth noting that "Zaman Al-Wasl" had previously opened the file of those banned from traveling, and received many complaints from Syrian citizens who were banned from traveling after the liberation of the country.

The newspaper launched a search engine in this regard that includes more than 800 thousand banned from traveling (leaving the country).
