Syrian ambassador to Muscat granted humanitarian asylum: Source

A source said that the Syrian ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, Idris Maya, recently obtained humanitarian asylum in Muscat, indicating that he may not be prepared to return to Damascus even if the Syrian government issues an official decision to terminate his diplomatic duties.

Cross-reported information indicates that Maya, who is accused by members of the Syrian community of activities linked to the security services, is currently benefiting from the protection provided by the Sultanate of Oman to those who receive this type of asylum. It is also believed that he has taken legal measures to allow him to remain outside Syria, at a time when demands are increasing for his accountability.

In the same context, diplomat Foutouh Qudsiyeh, daughter of Major General Abdul Fattah Qudsiyeh, and Tamadur Suleiman, obtained similar asylum, despite family and professional backgrounds that raise significant questions about their eligibility for protection.

In contrast, asylum applications submitted by Basil Hamoudeh and Mohammed Hassan, both employees of the same mission, were rejected.

These movements raise serious questions: Are other Syrian diplomatic missions experiencing similar mass asylum applications?

If so, how legal are these applications? What action should the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs take if diplomats working on behalf of the state decide to rebel against their duties and seek external protection?
