Interior Ministry announces comprehensive reform steps

The Ministry of Interior announced the launch of a package of development steps and measures in the security, police, anti-drug, and crime sectors, as well as in the fields of technology, prisons, and human resources. This is part of its efforts to build a modern and effective security institution that serves citizens and guarantees their safety and rights.

The Minister of Interior, Engineer Anas Khattab, explained that the ministry has decided to represent each governorate with a single official reporting directly to the ministry. This will unify security and police authorities under their supervision, and they will be responsible for all branches and offices in the governorate. This step aims to simplify the administrative structure and improve performance.

Regarding the anti-drug file, the minister confirmed that an expanded meeting was held with relevant stakeholders to develop the department's work and provide it with the necessary personnel and equipment, following the implementation of specialized training courses for employees. He noted that the former regime had turned the country into a "Captagon factory," which the ministry is seriously attempting to address.

Regarding the criminal investigations department, the department has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive study to develop its work by equipping criminal laboratories with the latest equipment and technology. The specialized committee has begun its work.

On the technical front, the Ministry announced that it has begun steps to develop the Civil Status database, along with creating a database for Ministry requests. It will also soon launch electronic service applications in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications to facilitate citizen services.

Regarding the Immigration and Passports Department, the Minister explained that staff were able to immediately resume operations after the liberation of Damascus, despite the damage to the headquarters. He noted that more than 160,000 passports have been issued, in addition to thousands of transactions that have been processed, with work continuing to improve performance.

Regarding the fight against remnants of the regime, the Ministry of Interior revealed the thwarting of a dangerous coup plot planned by officers affiliated with the former regime. The Ministry confirmed that it is working in coordination with the Ministry of Defense to update information and pursue outlaws.

Regarding human resources and planning, the Ministry has begun a comprehensive restructuring of all its sectors to meet requirements and tasks, and to ensure sound organizational relationships between various agencies.

Regarding prisons, the Minister stressed the importance of transforming prisons into community rehabilitation centers. The Ministry has begun steps to temporarily rehabilitate existing prisons until modern centers are equipped that respect the rights of detainees and contribute to the achievement of justice.

The Minister also emphasized that the Ministry has initiated comprehensive international cooperation, including sending missions to several countries to learn about modern expertise, in addition to receiving delegations to discuss developing security work. He indicated the Ministry's aspiration to expand this cooperation to address challenges, most notably the fight against ISIS, drugs, and organized crime.

Concluding his statement, the Minister of Interior said: "We promise our people that we, at the Ministry of Interior, are working silently so that you may live in peace and security, God willing. We will remain the watchful eye to preserve your security and safety, and to establish a stable reality in which all Syrians enjoy dignity and freedom, after these have been taken from them for more than fifty years. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds."
