How do we stand up to unaccountable war criminals in the new Syria?

First, the people who overthrew Bashar al-Assad are capable of changing their reality and holding war criminals accountable, with one word. But they need sovereign tools, free political will, and an independent legal framework.

Second, the artificial immunities granted to these criminals under the banner of "reconciliation" or "new reality" must be removed. History is not forgotten, and the blood of victims does not dry under the table of deals.

Third, documented files must be built to pursue these individuals inside and outside Syria, in international and national courts alike, and presented as irrefutable evidence against any justification or dilutionist discourse.

Fourth, it is necessary to dismantle the new networks of influence that have recycled these individuals within emerging institutions or ongoing negotiations, and to boldly and consistently expose their names and roles.

Fifth, a free, independent, and revolutionary media is the primary means of confrontation. The press must not compromise, remain silent, or compromise. The narrative war continues, and whoever wins it writes history.

Sixth, the memory of Syrians is made of iron; it cannot be forgotten or rusted. The oppression, destruction, detention, and disappearance that this people have experienced cannot be erased by a settlement speech or a promise of reconstruction. Every home that contains a martyr, detainee, or disappeared person, and every street that witnessed a demonstration or a massacre, is a living witness that will not be forgotten in the collective memory, no matter how long it takes. This memory is the truest weapon in the battle for justice.
