Syrian president receives Palestinian counterpart in Damascus

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa received his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, at the People's Palace in Damascus on Friday. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and a number of officials attended the reception, although the agency did not disclose further details about the content of the talks between the two sides.

Abbas's visit to Damascus comes about a month after his meeting with President al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the emergency Arab Summit in Cairo. It is the first time the Palestinian president has visited Syria since al-Sharaa assumed office.

It also complements Syria's openness to its Arab surroundings and strengthens communication with the Palestinian issue, given the political and security developments taking place in the region.

Palestinian Ambassador to Syria Samir al-Rifai stated on Thursday that the visit was official, noting the importance of coordination between Damascus and Ramallah at this critical stage.

This year has witnessed clear indications of both sides' desire to revitalize relations, most notably the visit of a Palestinian delegation headed by Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa to Damascus last January, where they met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and a number of Syrian officials.

These meetings are part of intensive diplomatic efforts seeking to strengthen Arab support for the Palestinian cause, especially in light of the ongoing escalation in the occupied territories and the challenges facing the Palestinian Authority at the domestic and international levels.
