The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that a tight security operation had been carried out in the Latakia countryside, resulting in the arrest of an armed outlaw group led by Samouel Watfa, following an armed clash with security forces.
The Ministry stated in an official statement that the clash led to the arrest of two members of the group and the seizure of weapons in their possession. It did not specify the total number of arrested members of the group.
The Ministry indicated that this group had participated in attacks targeting army and security points in the Syrian coastal region last March, which led to a temporary deterioration in security in the area and resulted in the deaths and injuries of security personnel.
It also clarified that the group was involved in robberies and armed robberies against civilians, making it a prime target for security forces, which have intensified their operations following the recent events on the coast.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the detainees have been referred to the Public Prosecution Office for further investigation and legal action.
On March 6, the Syrian coastal region witnessed a wave of security tensions and clashes, resulting from coordinated attacks launched by remnants of the ousted regime. This prompted extensive intervention by security forces, which launched sweeping operations that restored stability.
